Dr. Lumpkin's Mindfulness Background
Developing Mindfulness requires a
committment to continual practice.
Teaching Mindfulness requires one's own
constant practice and periodic intensive
training and retreats in the reach for ever
deepening insights into mindful living.
Dr. Lumpkin began learning mindfulness
practices in 1982 with Joseph Goldstein
in a week-long retreat hosted by the
Insight Meditation Society (one of the
premiere organizations teaching
mindfulness meditation). He then
attended another week-long retreat with
Joseph Goldstein in 1983. This launched
his journey into a life of mindfulness
practice.
Dr. Lumpkin began integrating
mindfulness approaches into his
psychotherapy practice with some clients
in 2002. He soon started teaching
mindfulness classes at UT Southwestern
Medical Center for both mental
health/medical professionals and for the
lay public.
